When Sinq Foods, an Ethiopian restaurant in Ascot Vale, Melbourne, decided to refresh its interior, the goal was clear — create an inviting, memorable entry that reflects both Ethiopian heritage and modern Melbourne design.
They partnered with Warkora Joinery to bring that vision to life — through a custom-crafted timber and rope arch that now defines the restaurant’s identity.
Before: A Blank Canvas
The restaurant’s front area originally featured a plain layout — functional but lacking a focal point.
The white walls and clean lines provided the perfect opportunity for transformation — a blank canvas ready to be shaped into something special.
Design Concept
Our design approach drew inspiration from traditional Ethiopian arches — a timeless symbol of welcome — reinterpreted through Australian materials and joinery precision.
The concept combined natural textures, curved geometry, and warm timber tones to express both culture and craftsmanship.
Each element was tailored to Sinq’s identity: authentic, modern, and deeply connected to nature.
The Making Process
1. Planning & Designing
We started by CNC-cutting and laminating Hardwood to create the arch’s curved structure. Each segment was joined, sanded, and measured with millimetre precision to ensure a perfect fit.
2. Branding Through Craft
Both vertical pillars were engraved with the restaurant’s name — Sinq — adding a subtle yet powerful branding detail. The black infill brought contrast against the honey-coloured timber grain.
3. Rope Wrapping
The arch was hand-wrapped with natural jute rope, carefully layered to achieve uniform tension and texture.
This not only gave it a raw, tactile surface but also created a symbolic bridge between craftsmanship and culture — much like the restaurant itself.
4. On-Site Installation
The final piece was installed at Sinq Foods’ entrance, complemented by a rope wall partition that adds rhythm and transparency.
When lit, the ropes and timber cast intricate shadows across the walls and floor — a soft, organic interplay of light that welcomes every guest.
After: A Transformation Complete
The completed feature now stands as the centrepiece of Sinq Foods’ entry, blending architectural artistry with cultural storytelling.
What was once a plain corner is now a warm, textured gateway that invites curiosity and connection.
